Why Do I Need to Transfer ROMs?

RetroPie does not come packaged with any games, so we'll need to transfer games to RetroPie which are also called ROMs. This guide provides you the steps you'll need to transfer your ROMs on to your RetroPie.

Transfer ROMs via RetroPie Manager

This is our recommended way to transfer ROMs to your RetroPie




Step 1: Access Raspberry Pi Configuration

Turn on your RetroPie, select the RetroPie system icon and select RetroPie Setup.




Step 2: Access Packages

Once the screen is availabe again, select 'Manage Packages' and OK.




Step 3: Access Experimental Packages

Now select 'Manage Experimental Packages' and OK.



Step 4: Install RetroPie Manager

Scroll down to near the bottom of the list and select the 'RetroPie Manager' and hit OK to begin the installation.



Step 5: RetroPie Manager Configuration

After the package has installed, select the 'Configuration/Options' so we can enable this new package.


Step 6: RetroPie Manager Configuration

Select the option to 'Start RetroPie Manager Now'. If you'd like, you can also select 'Start RetroPie Manager on Boot'. This just starts this service everytime you start your RetroPie.

You can now select 'Back' until you've returned to RetroPie's regular settings.



Step 7: Obtain RetroPie IP Address

Ensure that your RetroPie is connected to your network through WiFi or wired connections. Then select 'Show IP' on the RetroPie Settings.



Step 8: Note Your IP Address

Take note of your IP address shown on screen. It should be in the form of '192.168.XXX.XXX'. The numbers will vary person to person.


Step 9: Check Out the RetroPie Manager

Now on your computer, open a web browser and type in the IP address into the address bar and ending it with ':8000'. The final address should look something like '192.168.0.95:8000'.

Next, select the 'ROMs' section in the menu at the top of the page.




Step 10: Select Your Game System

Select the game system you want to view, edit, or add ROMs for.


Step 11: Transfer ROMs

Once you've selected a game system, you can drag and drop files directly onto this page or select from a file picker.

After transferring, remember to restart EmulationStation.

Transfer ROMs via File Transfer Application




Step 1: Go to Raspberry Pi Configuration

Go to the RetroPie options screen and select 'Raspi-Config'.



Step 2: Go to Interfacing Options

Scroll down until you get to the option of 'Interfacing Options' and select this option.



Step 3: Select the SSH Option

Select the 'SSH' option and continue by hitting select.



Step 4: Enable SSH

Make sure you select 'Yes' to enable SSH. You are free to turn it off later as you see fit.

Once that is done, select back until you are back into RetroPie's option menu.



Step 5: Obtain RetroPie IP Address

Ensure that your RetroPie is connected to your network through WiFi or wired connections. Then select 'Show IP' on the RetroPie Settings.



Step 6: Note Your IP Address

Take note of your IP address shown on screen. It should be in the form of '192.168.XXX.XXX'. The numbers will vary person to person.



Step 7: Download FileZilla

Go to FileZilla and download this application for your computer.

FileZilla will help us connect to our RetroPie and transfer games across your home network.


Step 8: Connect Using FileZilla

Once FileZilla is installed, connect to the RetroPie. Fill in the following into FileZilla.

  • Host: Your Obtained IP Address
  • Username: pi
  • Password: raspberry
  • Port: 22

Select 'Quickconnect' and you'll be connected to your RetroPie. If a dialog comes up regarding a security key, you can just hit 'Yes'.



Step 9: Select Your Game System

On the right side of the file navigation, you can navigate to 'RetroPie', 'roms' and here you will find folders for all the supported game systems.



Step 10: Transfer ROMs

The file navigation on the left side is your own computer. You can navigate to where your games are stored and drag/drop the ROMs to their corresponding game system folders on the right side.
